30 Something Reps. Meek and Wasserman Schultz Host Speaker Pelosi at Miami Children's Health Care Event

On October 25th, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a revised version of the bipartisan SCHIP bill which provides 10 million American children with health care. SCHIP provides health coverage to children whose parents do not quality for Medicaid, but cannot afford private insurance.

"This legislation targets the lowest-income uninsured children for outreach and enrollment, improves SCHIP benefits to include dental coverage and provides states incentives to enroll uninsured low-income children in health coverage programs," said Congressman Kendrick Meek. If this is not an American value, I don't know what is."

30 Something Working Group member Rep. Jason Altmire joined Speaker Pelosi and other Congressional leaders in an enrollment ceremony in the Capitol, in which Speaker Pelosi signed the College Cost Reduction and Access Act. This legislation is the largest investment in college financial aid since the GI Bill in 1944. She stated, "on behalf of the talented students who joined us today, and for millions more like them, we urge President Bush to support the dreams of middle-class American families by signing the College Cost Reduction and Access Act into law." After the bill was enrolled, it was sent to President Bush for his signature. Watch:

Reps. Kendrick Meek and Jason Altmire Return from Iraq - August 31, 2007

Reps. Kendrick Meek and Jason Altmire of the Speaker's 30 Something Working Group returned yesterday from a Congressional Delegation trip to Iraq.

Rep. Meek shares his views saying, "The American people are asking for our troops to come home. I think that should be the goal of the Congress - for our troops to come home. I think that there are some Members of Congress who feel that we should be there as long as we need to be there. I think that when you start looking at billions and billions of dollars that have been spent thus far on this war and then with the President just yesterday asking for an additional $50 billion dollars as though I was to ask you 'let me borrow $50 dollars' I think that that's the kind of attitude that has been allowed to take place here in Washington for far too long and we need to bring an end to it." Watch:

Rep. Altmire on seeing political failure first-hand in Iraq:

"I return today having seen first-hand the situation on the ground in Iraq. Two things are abundantly clear. First, our troops serving in Iraq are the very best America has to offer. They have done everything that has been asked of them and they are to be commended for their skill, their patriotism and their bravery. They are an inspiration to me and to every American. Second, unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the Iraqi government. The political leadership in Iraq has not only failed to make progress in nearly every measurable way, but in many cases they have gone backwards." Read more>>

Democrats are building an economic approach that lifts every American, not just the privileged few. The average American CEO earns more before lunchtime in one day than a minimum wage worker earns all year. This is not the kind of America we want our children to grow up in. The long awaited minimum wage increase was passed by the Democratic-led Congress this year and the first increase for working Americans in almost 10 years goes into effect today. The previous Republican-controlled Congresses blocked minimum wage proposals from being considered. In 2006 alone, Republicans blocked minimum wage legislation from coming to a vote 11 times.

Rep. Kendrick Meek and Rep. Tim Ryan took to the airwaves and the Internet this morning, talking with radio shows and bloggers, about the minimum wage increase:

Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, Representative George Miller (D-CA), and 30 Something Working Group Members Kendrick Meek, Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Tim Ryan joined college students to call on Republicans to reverse the raid on student aid. Students are already being squeezed by the Republican Congress’ $12 billion in cuts to student aid. Recently, Democrats unveiled their New Direction for America, which includes a proposal to make college tuition more affordable.

The Rap, Rock 'n Roll Radio Row, sponsored by Leader Pelosi and the "30 Something" Democrats, reached young workers in Democratic and Republican districts across the country. From state to state, Democrats are talking with young workers about the President's plan, and one thing is clear: the more young Americans hear about the President's plan, the less they like it. While President Bush likes to say that young people have the most to gain under his plan, the truth is that young people have the most to lose. Privatization would slash benefits by more than 40 percent for future retirees, and these benefit cuts hit younger workers the hardest. House Democrats are fighting to stop privatization and strengthen Social Security so that future generations have a benefit they can rely on. Listen on HouseDemocrats.gov >>
