Welcome

Speaker Pelosi's "30 Something" working group consists of the Democratic Members of the House of Representatives who are under the age of 40. These Members are committed to engaging the next generation of Americans further in government and the political process. "30 Something" Members seek to talk and listen to young Americans about the issues they care about and how Congress can better represent their opinions on those issues.

What Should We Do With the Rubber Stamp?

This week marks the end of the 109th Congress and our last 30 Something hour of the year. Night after night, we've been using our giant Rubber Stamp to illustrate the Republican Congress rubber-stamping the Administration's policies, but starting in January, thanks to Americans across the country, we will no longer have a need for it. How should we celebrate this momentous occasion? What should we do with the Rubber Stamp? Click here to make a suggestion >>

Watch Rep. Meek and Rep. Tim Ryan discuss the suggestions thus far:

Democratic Initiatives

Democrats want to address the real challenges Americans face every day by protecting the American people, making health care more affordable; lowering gas prices and achieving energy independence; helping working families; cutting college costs; ensuring a dignified retirement, making our government fiscally responsible again, and restoring honest leadership and open government back the US Congress. Below are a few of our proposals. Click here for the complete list.

100 Hours Our New Direction begins with a commitment to integrity, civility, and fiscal responsibility. We will break the link between lobbyists and legislation. We will govern the House of Representatives under bipartisan administration, so that the voice of every American will be heard. And we commit to no new deficit spending, with pay-as-you-go budgeting. These are the principles by which we will govern. And under these principles we will take our country in a new direction, with priorities that address the urgent needs of the American people. The New Direction for America advances the right priorities – to make our nation safer and our economy fairer; to make health care and college more affordable; to energize America with energy independence; and to guarantee a dignified retirement for all Americans. These initiatives – the product of a united Democratic House Caucus working together with our Senate colleagues - are our priorities for the 109th Congress. We are committed to building an America where all families can live and prosper in diverse, safe, and vibrant communities. Learn more

At $5.15 per hour, the minimum wage is now at its lowest level in 50 years, adjusted for inflation. A minimum wage earner working full-time all year will earn just $10,700, well below the poverty line. The most basic needs of survival simply cannot be met – it takes a full day’s work for a minimum wage earner to pay for just one tank of gas. This is unjust and un-American. Learn more

House Democrats believe that America needs a New Direction that provides opportunity, security and prosperity for all Americans. House Democrats want to address the real challenges facing the American people – high health care costs, college affordability, rising gas and energy prices, retirement security, and stagnant wages. House Democrats also make homeland security and support for our veterans and military personnel a real priority, not just a talking point. Learn more

House and Senate Democrats unveiled the comprehensive Democratic plan to protect America: Real Security. The Democratic plan for Real Security will protect Americans and restore our country’s position of international leadership. Learn more

The talent, intellect, and entrepreneurial spirit of the American people have made this nation the leader in economic and technological advancements. House Democrats believe American leadership is fueled by national investments in an educated and skilled workforce, groundbreaking federal research and development by public and private sectors, and a steadfast commitment to being the most competitive and innovative nation in the world. House Democrats Unveil Comprehensive Biodiesel Energy Package. The plan calls for an increase in the use of homegrown biofuels, an increase in the number of flexible fuel vehicles on the road, and encourages the growth of locally owned biofuel plants to compete with the big multinational oil companies. The Honest Leadership and Open Government Act is a comprehensive government reform plan that will clean up and protect the government from the Republican culture of corruption and quid pro quo politics. The Act will reinvigorate Congressional ethics rules and institute broad-based lobbying reforms to ensure that the representatives of the people are operating in the people's interest, not the special interests. No other group of Americans has stood stronger and braver for our democracy than troops and our veterans. House Democrats introduced the New GI Bill of Rights for the 21st Century to honor the bravery of our troops and the tremendous sacrifices that their families have made. The New GI Bill will repeal unfair tax burdens on military families, provide Veterans with the benefits they deserve like affordable health care, education and job training, strengthen our support for our men and women in uniform and improve benefits for our National Guard/Reservists.
