House Majority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) today issued the following statement after House passage of the Secure Fence Act (H.R. 6061), introduced by Homeland Security Committee Chairman Peter King (R-NY):
    “Securing our borders and stopping the flood of illegal immigration into the United States must be our first priority, and today’s vote was a major step in reaching that goal. Providing additional fencing, border infrastructure, and more state-of-the-art technology and surveillance is only the first step in Republicans’ plans to strengthen border security.

Mr. Speaker, today is an important day for the House as an institution. There has been much written this year about the practice of earmarking, which has allowed lawmakers to anonymously insert spending projects into bills without scrutiny or significant debate. It’s a major source of frustration for the American people, and for those of us who believe we need greater accountability and transparency in the way Congress operates.

Earlier this year I – along with many of my colleagues – called for reforms to the earmark process.

House Majority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) and Homeland Security Chairman Peter King (R-NY) today announced that the Secure Fence Act (H.R. 6061), introduced today by Chairman King, will be considered on the floor tomorrow as the first effort in a series of border security initiatives House Republicans are working to send to President Bush this year. Tomorrow, GOP leaders are expected to unveil additional border security measures they plan to act on in the coming weeks.“House Republicans believe we must address the immediate need to secure our borders,” said Chairman King.
