What more does Sec. Kerry need to see or hear in order to call these atrocities what they are? This is genocide. https://t.co/JfP8wmQ3wJ— Paul Ryan (@SpeakerRyan) March 15, 2016
The Obama administration has just 24 hours left to comply with a congressionally mandated deadline passed in December to determine whether ISIS’s atrocities against religious and ethnic minorities constitute a genocide.
This administration has had three full months to make this determination, but we’re not getting our hopes up. The Associated Press has already reported that the administration will “likely” miss this deadline. And when asked about the issue yesterday, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest responded, “Applying the label of genocide as a policy matter is one that has significant legal implications.”
Actually, it’s really quite simple. As Speaker Ryan said yesterday, “What more does Secretary John Kerry need to see or hear in order to call these atrocities for what they are? This is genocide—plain and simple.”
The American people agree. Earlier this week, the House unanimously voted to declare these crimes a genocide. This administration has wavered on this critical issue for too long—now it’s time to act. Secretary Kerry should meet this deadline and call ISIS’s target killing of minorities what it is: a genocide.
