As promised, we are taking a step-by-step approach to repeal and replace Obamacare. On Thursday, the Energy and Commerce Committee will hold a legislative hearing on four specific bills to deliver relief from the health care law.
As we work to keep our promise, Democrats are—unsurprisingly—trying to scare folks into thinking that the status quo is the best their health care is going to get. Unfortunately, the law itself is proving its own failures to people firsthand. Here are three of the biggest promises and claims from Democrats that are being debunked right now:
1. You’ll pay less for more.
The rhetoric: During his tenure in office, President Obama claimed dozens of times that Obamacare would lower the cost of insurance while increasing the quality of care for the average American family.
The reality: Many Americans insured under Obamacare will actually pay more for less this year—way more. A new report out last week proves how premiums, deductibles, and out-of-pocket costs are skyrocketing. To make matters worse, "36 percent of all regions in the U.S. will have only one participating health insurer on an Obamacare exchanges.” One choice is no choice at all.
2. People will flock to Obamacare exchanges.
The rhetoric: Days before President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act into law, it was estimated that 23 million people would be insured through the program’s exchanges by 2017.
The reality: The Congressional Budget Office issued new projections last week that the actual number will be 10 million—less than half of the original amount promised when the bill was signed into law. And those who are signing up are proving more expensive to cover than expected.
3. “Repeal . . . will lead to death, disability, and suffering.”
The rhetoric: In her inaugural weekly address, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) claimed that repealing Obamacare—a law that, in her words, has experienced “immense progress”—will result in widespread death and suffering.
The reality: Similar claims of 36,000 annual deaths made by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) were already disproven earlier this month—but that didn’t stop Leader Pelosi from following suit. Unfortunately, this law has proved its shortcomings on its own. And while the scare tactics Leader Pelosi used painted a grim picture, the status quo remains: Keeping Obamacare will result in even higher costs, fewer choices, and lower-quality care for Americans nationwide.
That’s why Republicans are focused on repealing Obamacare and replacing it with a patient-centered system—one that prioritizes affordability, quality, and choice. Because being forced into something by the government is the last thing a patient needs when working with his or her health care provider. We invite Democrats to stop with the scare tactics and start working with Republicans to give American individuals, families, and businesses the relief they need and the care they deserve.
