Yesterday, the House Oversight & Government Reform Committee heard from small business owners about the impact ObamaCare is having on their ability to grow and create jobs.  The small business men and women at the hearing confirmed that the law’s employer mandates, regulations and rising costs create a disincentive to hiring and add to the economic uncertainty that is holding back hiring.  Here are some of the highlights:

  • “The Uncertainty of the Last Several Years, and Associated with the Health Care Law In Particular, Has Impacted Our Ability to Create Jobs.” “For White Castle, the uncertainty of the last several years, and associated with the health care law in particular, has impacted our ability to create jobs by postponing expansion plans into new markets for our brand.  We have conducted the extensive research necessary to explore expansion into other parts of the country, but have not acted on those plans yet due to the uncertain cost environment. … The uncertainty of the increased costs the health care law brings, not to mention a variety of regulations on other issues, creates a risk that no one can manage against.  The result is that the growth that drives job creation in our industry is put on hold, and so are the jobs.  (Jamie Richardson, Vice President, White Castle Systems, Inc., 7/10/12)
  • “In this Economy, When Jobs Are on Everyone’s Mind – Why Would You Penalize Businesses for Hiring…?” “I may be a business woman from the mid-west, but it certainly seems to me like the politicians enacted a law with very perverse incentives. Particularly in this economy, when jobs are on everyone’s mind – why would you penalize businesses for hiring full-time employees and provide a competitive advantage to those businesses that limit the hours their employees can work. … [T]he laws you create will either foster an environment that gives business owners greater confidence and certainty to grow and generate new jobs, or one that does just the opposite. Regrettably, this new health care law is already doing the latter and Congress must take the necessary action to rectify it.” (Mary Miller, CEO, JANCOA Janitorial Services, Inc., 7/10/12)
  • ObamaCare “Means Less Growth, Fewer Jobs, Low Business Confidence and Economic Stagnation.” “Small business owners across the country are facing the same set of challenges as MCM Composites.  Thousands of small businesses across the U.S. taking similar actions as my company means less growth, fewer jobs, low business confidence and economic stagnation.  The impact is real, and has serious consequences for U.S. competitiveness and the future of entrepreneurship.” (Michael Fredrich, President and Owner, MCM Composites, 7/10/12)

According to the Associated Press, ObamaCare – the president’s “signature domestic achievement” - “remains unpopular and divisive among the public.”  Republicans are listening to the American people, and will vote today to fully repeal ObamaCare – a law that is increasing uncertainty and making it harder for small businesses to hire.  As Speaker Boehner has said, “What Americans want is a common-sense, step-by-step approach to health care reform that will protect Americans’ access to the care they need, from the doctor they choose, at a lower cost.  Republicans stand ready to work with a president who will listen to the people and will not repeat the mistakes that gave our country ObamaCare.”
