What's In a Waiver? An Admission That ObamaCare Destroys Jobs, Increases Costs
So far, the Obama Administration has issued more than 1,300 waivers temporarily exempting more than 3 million Americans from the Democrats’ health care law. Each waiver is a clear admission by the Administration that – contrary to the promises – ObamaCare threatens jobs and economic growth and makes health care more expensive. Here’s a look at how ObamaCare…
- …THREATENS JOBS & ECONOMIC GROWTH: “Mr. Obama’s own Medicare chief actuary now acknowledges that Obamacare may cause up to 20 million Americans to lose their current health insurance policies, and doctors are increasingly leaving Medicare, Medicaid and the practice of medicine altogether. … The Congressional Budget Office’s budget director estimates the law actually will destroy 800,000 jobs. ... The now-familiar monthly trickling down of new waivers is, at best, a tacit admission that Obamacare is a failure.” (Obamacare waiver corruption must stop, Washington Times, 5/20/11)
- …MAKES HEALTH CARE MORE EXPENSIVE: “In a bizarre near-admission that the so called ‘Affordable Care Act’ is anything but, the White House issued a blog post defending itself. It is issuing waivers that exempt employers ‘from the annual limit provision of the law if it would disrupt access to existing insurance arrangements or adversely affect premiums, causing people to lose coverage.’ In other words, Obamacare would cause people to lose their insurance coverage or cause costs to go up if they don't grant these waivers. Wasn't Obamacare supposed to do just the opposite?” (Obamacare repeal means waivers for everybody, Washington Examiner, 5/23/11)
- …FORCES AMERICANS OUT OF COVERAGE THEY LIKE: “To date, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has granted federal health care law exemptions to more than three million American workers covered by more than 1,300 unions, companies and insurers that had voluntarily offered low-cost health plans with annual benefit limits. Meddling ObamaCare architects outlawed those private plans in the name of ‘patients' rights.’ But without special waivers, the escapees would have been forced to hike premiums or drop insurance coverage altogether for mostly low-wage, seasonal and part-time workers.” (How does one get 'waived'?, Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, 5/23/11)
- …NEEDS TO BE REPEALED & DEFUNDED: “It makes sense that labor unions, states and companies of all sizes want to escape Obamacare’s costly requirements. That’s because it’s clear that Obamacare already isn’t working, even though the law is barely out of the gate. But granting waivers here and there merely postpones the effects of the law for a couple of years. It’s not the solution America needs. A better idea would be to repeal Obamacare and grant America a permanent nationwide waiver.” (How about a National Obamacare Waiver?, Heritage Foundation, 5/18/11)
Grace-Marie Turner asked in today’s Washington Examiner, “Can't we all just get a waiver from Obamacare?” By voting to repeal and defund ObamaCare, that’s exactly what Republicans are looking to do: permanently protect all families and small businesses from the budget-busting law’s job-destroying mandates, tax hikes, and penalties.
