House Approves Bipartisan Ryan Resolution Reaffirming NATO Commitments | Speaker.gov

WASHINGTON—House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) issued the following statement after House passage of H. Res. 397, his bipartisan resolution reaffirming Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty:

“Congress has a long bipartisan tradition of building and strengthening our overseas alliances. Earlier this year, I led a delegation of Republicans and Democrats to key NATO allies in Europe to deliver a clear message that NATO is absolutely essential to our national security and global stability. And today, lawmakers from both parties came together to reaffirm the principle of collective defense and urge our allies to meet their defense spending obligations. The United States must remain the world’s leading force for good, but we cannot confront the challenges of the 21st century alone. With all the threats we and our partners face around the globe, a strong and secure NATO is more important than ever before. I thank my fellow House leaders and colleagues on both sides of the aisle for supporting this important resolution.”

NOTE: H. Res. 397 is co-sponsored by Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD), Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce (R-CA), and Foreign Affairs Committee Ranking Member Eliot Engel (D-NY).
