House & Senate Leaders to Hold Gold Medal Ceremony Honoring Montford Point Marines
House and Senate leaders will award the Congressional Gold Medal to the Montford Point Marines in a ceremony to be held next Wednesday, June 27, 2012, in Emancipation Hall of the Capitol Visitor Center.
The Gold Medal represents Congress’s highest expression of national appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions. Pursuant to H.R. 2447, introduced by Rep. Corrine Brown (D-FL) and signed into law on November 23, 2011, a medal is being awarded to honor the service of the nation’s first African-American Marines, who received basic training at Montford Point Camp, New River, North Carolina between 1942 and 1949.
House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH), Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) will participate in this event. Additional details will be released closer to the date of the ceremony.
