At the White House today, Speaker Ryan met with President Obama, Vice President Biden, and Majority Leader McConnell to discuss the year ahead and opportunities to find common ground.
Topics included the Zika virus, the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), the opioid epidemic, criminal justice reform, Puerto Rico’s fiscal challenges, and efforts to cure cancer.
The Speaker, in particular, expressed hope that progress can be made to reform our criminal justice and mental health systems. The leaders also discussed a number of concerns that lawmakers have raised about the substance of TPP that must still be addressed.
In addition, the speaker expressed concern over the administration’s implementation of the new Visa Waiver Program.
Following the meeting, Speaker Ryan and President Obama had lunch and continued to discuss the big issues facing the country and the differing perspectives of Congress and the executive branch.
