House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) today announced that U.S. Senator Daniel K. Inouye (D-HI) will lie in state in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda for public viewing on Thursday, December 20, 2012. Sen. Inouye, 88, passed away yesterday at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD.
“Daniel Inouye’s life of service and sacrifice was dedicated to the preservation of democracy, so it is right and fitting that he will lie in state under one of its most enduring symbols, the Capitol Dome,” Speaker Boehner said. “It will be our honor to join the American people in paying final respects to this great senator and statesman.”
“Senator Inouye was one of the noblest souls this body has ever seen. He was a true patriot and statesman who represented our fiftieth state from the first day it joined the union,” Leader Reid said. “He was an institution unto himself, and he deserves to spend one more day in this institution to which he dedicated his life’s work.”
Additional details will be forthcoming.
