Statement Ahead of Vote on Bipartisan Syria Sanctions | Speaker.gov

WASHINGTON—House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) issued the following statement ahead of a House vote on H.R. 5732, the Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act to sanction the Syrian government:

Republicans and Democrats recognize the need to isolate the Assad regime for its continued atrocities against the Syrian people. I’m glad the White House has stopped blocking these critical sanctions, which are a necessary response to Assad’s crimes against humanity. I want to thank Chairman Royce and Ranking Member Engel for working together in a bipartisan fashion to bring this bill to the floor.”

NOTE: Speaker Ryan has repeatedly urged the White House to stop blocking this bipartisan legislation. In September, he argued “I think that this administration is essentially protecting some of the world’s worst war criminals. That’s why I’m calling on the White House to allow House Democrats to work with us to pass these sanctions in short order.” Read more below:
