Boehner Touts Earmark-Free, Jobs-Focused Water Resources Bill | Speaker.gov

WASHINGTON, DC – At a press conference with Republican leaders today, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) commended Transportation Committee Chairman Bill Shuster (R-PA) for his leadership on the Water Resources & Reform Development Act (WRRDA), legislation on the House floor this week that, in a monumental departure from previous years, contains no earmarks.  Following are Boehner’s remarks:

“What do most Americans want us to focus on here in Congress? According to Gallup, it’s jobs.  Exactly what we’ve been doing over the last four and a half years, and we continue to make the American people’s priorities our priority.

“Chairman Shuster, and House and Senate negotiators, should be commended for their great work on the Water Resources Reform & Development Act.  This bill will help create jobs, will help strengthen our economy.  And it’s the first time that this bill’s ever been produced where there are no earmarks in this bill.  And it’s a significant policy achievement, and I want to pat Chairman Shuster on the back for a job well done.

“It demonstrates the kind of progress that we can make when Democrats will work together with us to deal with the American people’s priorities.  Now, we’ve got still nearly 40 jobs bills sitting over in the United States Senate.  It’s time for the Senate to continue to work with us to deal with those issues that would create more jobs, higher wages, and strengthen our economy for the American people.”
