George Washington. Abraham Lincoln. Ronald Reagan. All these men were great American presidents who stood tall in the defense of freedom. (Literally, they were all above six foot.) But when Speaker Ryan considers who his favorite president is these days, there's one founder who stands out among the rest: James Madison, the Father of the Constitution.
President Madison was our fourth president, serving from 1809-1817, and though he may have been our most vertically challenged president (at a towering 5'4"), his influence in authoring the Constitutional separation of powers remains one the guiding principles of conservatism—a principle, Speaker Ryan argues, which we have a moral obligation to restore.
In the video above, Speaker Ryan also reveals who are his least favorite presidents of all time, so be sure to watch to the end.
