The story goes that Ronald Reagan and Tip O’Neill didn’t see eye-to-eye on much, but they were friends after 6 o’clock and, once a year, around lunchtime, when they broke bread in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. This is from the March 16, 1983 edition of The New York Times:
“‘I'm going to cook you some Boston corned beef and I'm going to have an Irish storyteller there,’ the Speaker told the President last Thursday… Quickly Mr. Reagan replied, ‘I'll have to polish up some new Irish jokes.’”
So began a decades-long tradition that continues tomorrow when Speaker Boehner hosts President Obama and Prime Minister Enda Kenny at the Capitol – and we want you to be a part of it.
