Washington, D.C. – House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) released the following statement on House passage of H.R. 34, the 21st Century Cures Act:
“Disease does not discriminate. It crosses borders and affects every age group. It comes to the rich and to the poor. And though we have made amazing progress, there are still thousands of diseases with no treatment and no cure. For years, Chairman Fred Upton (MI-06) has worked behind the scenes on an issue that touches every American and to make disease a thing of the past. The 21st Century Cures Act is a historic step toward reaching that goal.
“We have a duty to take care of the sick and suffering in our society, and by reforming the outdated FDA approval process and creating incentives to find more treatments that work, we will give people new hope for longer and healthier lives. This legislation also includes much of Representative Tim Murphy’s (PA-18) work to fix our mental health system so those suffering from mental illness have the care they need. Today, we look to the future with new hope of a healthier and stronger America.”
