Appearing on The Laura Ingraham Show this morning, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) highlighted Republicans’ plan to cut spending, avoid default, and deny President Obama a blank check debt limit increase. This plan “is the best opportunity we have to hold the president’s feet to the fire,” Boehner said. Following is a link to the audio and excerpts from the interview:

BOEHNER SAYS NO BLANK CHECK FOR PRESIDENT OBAMA:

“Listen, it’s time to do what is doable, and this bill isn’t perfect. … That’s what happens when you have a Democrat-controlled Senate and a Democrat in the white House. This bill was agreed to by the bipartisan Senate leadership, and we believe we can get this on the president’s desk, and make it law. Listen, we're not going to give him a $2.5 trillion blank check that lets him continue his spending binge through the next election. That’s not going to happen.”

BOEHNER: THIS IS OUR BEST OPPORTUNITY TO HOLD THE PRESIDENT’S FEET TO THE FIRE:

“I think what people want is Cut, Cap, and Balance. It's what I want. The House passed it last week. The Senate demonstrated they can't pass it. At this point in time we’ve got to find a vehicle that will pass that will insist the cuts in spending are bigger than the increase in the debt limit. … The path we've been on here for the last four days I think is a reasonable path that will solve the problem, that will begin the process of the making the tough decisions that need to be made to cut spending here in Washington. … The plan we have got on the table is the best opportunity we have to hold the president's feet to the fire. He wants a $2.4 trillion blank check that lets him continue his spending binge through the next election. This is the time to say no.”

BOEHNER ON HOW GOP PLAN IS THE ONLY ONE WITH A PATH TO THE PRESIDENT’S DESK:

“In the absence of any other plan, your plan becomes the plan. The fact is, Harry Reid will not get the votes for his plan. My plan can pass the House, it can pass the Senate, and the president will have no choice but to sign it into law.

BOEHNER ON CBO SCORE: “OUR PLEDGE WAS … NO SMOKE AND MIRRORS”

Our pledge was that, you know, no smoke and mirrors. So I'm glad we went through the process with the CBO. I didn't want anybody to be surprised, although I was very surprised when I got this back yesterday. We explained to our members this morning what happened, and I think they understand it.”

BOEHNER SAYS “ULTIMATE ANSWER” IS A BALANCED BUDGET AMENDMENT:

“The ultimate answer is to have a Balanced Budget Amendment in effect. We need to pressure members on both sides of the aisle to support a Balanced Budget Amendment. And we may have some votes on that issue as early as this week.”

BOEHNER: DEMS STILL HAVE AN “INSATIABLE APPETITE” FOR JOB-DESTROYING TAX HIKES:

“There is an insatiable appetite from Democrats here in Washington to take more money from the American people so they can spend it here in Washington. It’s the wrong thing to do. When you look at the approach I've taken, Barack Obama hates it, Harry Reid hates it, Nancy Pelosi hates it.”
