If the Emmy Awards considered such things, President Obama’s Internal Revenue Service (IRS) would have easily taken the award for best cover-up. Every time IRS officials’ alibis and excuses collapse like a House of Cards, they concoct new ones, only to change their stories again a few weeks later. The wrongdoing uncovered, the House of Lies, the arrogance run amok – it all constitutes an epic Scandal in need of a True Detective.
The Obama administration’s Big Bang Theory of numerous hard drives conveniently Breaking Bad simply strains credulity. In the wake of officials’ refusals to tell the truth about their targeting of conservatives, the House of Representatives passed a resolution in May calling on Attorney General Eric Holder to appoint a special counsel to investigate. Nearly four months later, he’s done absolutely nothing to ensure that justice is done.
Meanwhile, the Obama administration’s version of events continues to evolve:
Attorneys for the Justice Department surprised Judicial Watch, a right-leaning watchdog group, on Friday by saying that they have copies of every electronic message ever sent from Lerner, a former top IRS official who is a key figure in a targeting scandal involving conservative groups that sought tax-exempt status.
The IRS told Congress that thousands of Lerner’s emails sent prior to 2011 were hopelessly lost thanks to a hard drive crash that left the data unrecoverable. A back-up system, they said, had also been erased. Officials told Congress about a half dozen IRS officials in addition to Lerner, some affiliated with the targeting, had also lost emails due to computer crashes.
Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton said Justice Department lawyers informed him that the federal government keeps a back-up copy of every email and record in the event of a government-wide catastrophe.
The back-up system includes the IRS emails, too. …
Judicial Watch is now seeking the release of the emails, which Justice Department lawyers say would be hard to find because of the significant size of the backup system.
And you thought Saul Goodman was shrewd.
So which is it? Do Lois Lerner’s emails still exist or not? It’s seems the government is working overtime to run out the clock and hide the truth:
In two elusive and nebulous sworn declarations [to federal Judge Emmet Sullivan], we can glean that Ms. Lerner had two Blackberries. One was issued to her on November 12, 2009. According to a sworn declaration, this is the Blackberry that contained all the emails (both sent and received) that would have been in her “Outlook” and drafts that never were sent from her Blackberry during the relevant time.
With incredible disregard for the law and the Congressional inquiry, the IRS admits that this Blackberry “was removed or wiped clean of any sensitive or proprietary information and removed as scrap for disposal in June 2012.” This is a year after her hard drive “crash” and months after the Congressional inquiry began.
This should be a serious investigation, but in a Shameless move, President Obama and Attorney General Holder are treating it like nothing more than a Game of Thrones – a damning indication that there’s a lot more than “a smidgeon of corruption” at play.
