“The admission by the Obama administration that the Internal Revenue Service targeted political opponents echoes some of the most shameful abuses of government power in 20th-century American history.” Speaker Boehner, 5/10/13
When House Republicans uncovered evidence that the IRS had “systematically violated the rights of Americans for almost two years,” Speaker Boehner pledged that Republicans would “continue to seek answers until we get to the truth.” Republicans have kept that pledge, and the results of that effort are now available all in one place: gop.gov/IRS.
Over the past year, the House Ways & Means and Oversight & Government Reform Committees have conducted numerous hearings and interviews, issued subpoenas to hold the administration accountable, pressed top level officials on their involvement in the IRS targeting, issued reports on their findings, and more. The new website from the House Republican Conference provides a comprehensive resource for all of that information, helping to put oversight and accountability in the hands of the American people.
In addition to the investigative work that has been done, House Republicans continue to take action to protect Americans from unlawful targeting by the IRS. Last month, the House passed the Stop Targeting of Political Beliefs by the IRS Act to prevent new rules that would essentially make targeting the official policy of the IRS, and allow the House to continue its investigation. The Democratic-led Senate has failed to take up the measure.
