WASHINGTON—Today, House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) signed S. 534, the Protecting Young Victims from Sexual Abuse and Safe Sport Authorization Act. This measure is in response to reports of abuse in amateur athletics, including within the U.S. gymnastics program. He was joined today by Reps. Susan Brooks (R-IN) and Lois Frankel (D-FL), the authors of the House version of this bipartisan legislation. Speaker Ryan made the following comments:
"It’s horrifying what we’ve seen happen. I think each of us have met with these young women and I’m so impressed with their courage and inspired by their ability to speak out. This legislation will address the problem—this legislation will bring accountability—and I’m just very pleased to sign this legislation.”
NOTE: Last week, Speaker Ryan met with gymnasts Mattie Larson, Jamie Dantzscher, and Jeanette Antoine, and had the chance to hear their stories.
