Speaker Ryan is at Catholic Charities Fort Worth (CCFW) this morning, talking about workforce development and ways to help Americans get out of poverty and into good-paying jobs. He will be taking part in a discussion with CCFW clients, mentors, supporters, and we invite you to follow along with us on speaker.gov/live. That’s at 11:45 a.m. ET/10:45 a.m. CT

Speaker Ryan often talks about the vital role that local organizations like Catholic Charities play in helping people escape poverty. “There are people in communities who are actually out there fighting poverty eye to eye, soul to soul, in neighborhoods that actually do well, that succeed," he told NPR in 2016

On Monday, in his stop at Southwest Airlines, Speaker Ryan previewed today’s visit

“We think in this kind of an economy, where we’re producing jobs and wages are going up. . .there’s no reason not to get people out of poverty into the economy. There’s no reason not to get people the skills that they need so they can get good jobs and opportunities. . . . One of the best Catholic Charities is right here in the DFW area, and they’re working on getting people from welfare to work. They’re working on getting people the skills they need.”

We recently did a deeper dive into why workforce development is so critical, given that our economy currrently faces a worker shortage, with more job openings than workers available. Take a look:

“The reality is that the United States is facing a worker shortage. . . We just have to connect people with the opportunities to realize the American Idea. That’s why, with so much untapped potential sitting on the sidelines, Congress should continue to advance policies that incentivize work, foster independence, and help people escape poverty. Now is the time to help smooth the pathway from welfare to work by prioritizing workforce development.

So, with that: tune in to speaker.gov/live at approx. 11:45 a.m. ET/10:45 a.m. CT for a discussion on workforce development.
