Washington, D.C. – House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) released the following statement on House passage of H.R. 3293, the Scientific Research in the National Interest Act:
“Part of the reason why the executive bureaucracy is prone to waste is because it refuses to be transparent. Taxpayer money is spent, debt is accumulated, and the result is a massive administrative state with little accountability, minimal transparency, and rampant waste. Case in point is the National Science Foundation (NSF), which has spent millions of dollars on projects of little to no apparent public value.
“The House today voted to restore accountability at the NSF. The bipartisan legislation passed today demands that NSF make grants on the basis of merit in a transparent process and then make it known, in plain language, why each grant is in the national interest. This is just another step the House is taking to ensure the government serves the people, not itself.”
