Congressman Hal Rogers (KY-05) has represented the state of Kentucky for over 42 years in Congress, and today he was celebrated as the newest Dean of the House of Representatives.
Rep. Rogers has mentored countless Members of Congress, worked to safeguard taxpayer dollars, and fought for the constituents of his district to pass legislation to combat the opioid crisis that is gripping the country.
In remarks on the House floor and at a reception for the Dean, Leader McCarthy recognized Rep. Rogers for his leadership in Congress, and noted that “as a leader, appropriator, and colleague, Hal has proven to be the definition of a Kentucky Gentleman and the embodiment of a Kentucky workhorse.”
Leader McCarthy’s remarks as prepared are below, or you may watch online here.
“I rise today to congratulate Congressman Hal Rogers on becoming the new Dean of the House.
“During his 42 years in Congress, Congressman Rogers has represented Kentucky with pride, purpose, and principles.
“Hal has led in Congress with a strong commitment to his constituents – working to improve their lives by passing important legislation like a bill to combat the opioid crisis.
“He also led in Congress with deep love and respect for the institution – reinvigorating regular order in the appropriations process, conducting thorough oversight that safeguarded taxpayer dollars, and serving with civility.
“Over the years, members of Congress come and go. Many good and honorable people have served our great country in this select body.
“But few embody what it means to be ‘Dean of the House’ like Hal does.
“In the 15 years I’ve known him, Hal has always been joyful, generous, and civil. He has always taken the time to mentor younger members and share his wisdom.
“That is why I made a point of bringing freshman members to dinner with Hal – so they could learn from his example.
“This House is fortunate to serve with such a gracious public servant. And all of us are fortunate to have Hal as our new Dean.”
