Pelosi Statement on Republican Obstruction of the Freedom To Vote Act

Press Release

Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement after Republicans blocked the Freedom to Vote Act from advancing in the Senate:

“Today, Senate Republicans voted to aid and abet the most dangerous campaign of voter suppression since Jim Crow – undermining their constituents, the Constitution and our country.

“The stakes could not be higher: this year alone, 19 Republican-controlled state legislatures have enacted 33 laws to disenfranchise voters, while Republican-appointed judges continue to rip away hard-won voter protections in the courts.  This all-out assault on the sanctity of the ballot is silencing the voices of voters – especially voters of color – and diminishing their say in the destiny of our democracy.

“House Democrats have led the charge to reverse this anti-democratic tide and return power to the American people.  Our For The People Act tears down many barriers to the ballot box, prohibits partisan gerrymandering and combats dark, special interest money in politics.  Our Voting Rights Advancement Act blocks future restrictions imposed by states with dark histories of discrimination.  While Democrats offered a good-faith compromise with the Freedom to Vote Act, Republicans refuse to even begin debate – because they know the only way they can win elections is by attacking the precious pillars of our democracy.

“Democrats will always be For The People: fighting for the public interest, not the special interests.  We will not rest until we safeguard the sacred right to vote for generations to come.”
