Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement commemorating Veterans Day:

“On Veterans Day, Americans come together in gratitude for the courageous heroes who have answered our nation’s call to serve.  Since our earliest days, and in our darkest hours, generations of patriots have proudly stepped forward to defend our nation: from the fields of Yorktown to the beaches of Normandy to the jungles of Vietnam to the deserts of the Middle East – and, over the last year and a half, the frontlines of the pandemic.  And after their tours of duty, veterans have blessed our nation with their continued service in our politics, our businesses and our communities.

“The Democratic House has worked relentlessly to honor the extraordinary valor and sacrifice of our veteran community: improving veteran mental health care, expanding access to VA care for women veterans and advancing justice for veterans of color.  With our American Rescue Plan, Democrats helped countless veterans experiencing homelessness find safe, affordable homes.  And Congress applauds the strong leadership of President Biden to end the shameful ban on transgender Servicemembers – a decade after the Congress proudly repealed Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell – as well as recently developing a new strategy to prevent suicides in military and veterans community.

“As our nation Builds Back Better in the months ahead, Democrats will not rest until all those who have fought for our freedom can enjoy the benefits they have earned and the future they deserve.  Today, and every day, let us vow to honor this sacred pledge: that just as the military leaves no one behind on the battlefield, we leave no veteran behind when they return home.”
