Pelosi Statement on Retirement Announcement of Jackie Speier
Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement after Bay Area Congresswoman Jackie Speier announced her retirement at the end of her term:
“Congresswoman Jackie Speier is an extraordinary Member of Congress and a significant leader in our Country. Her courageous and values-based leadership, particularly on behalf of the women, survivors and the vulnerable, has made a difference in the lives of countless Americans and has strengthened our nation.
“As Chair of the Military Personnel Subcommittee of the Armed Services Committee and on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, Congresswoman Speier has helped keep our men and women in uniform and our nation safe. As she defends our national security, Congresswoman Speier has been a defender of the economic security of the American people, working on the Committee on Oversight and Reform to bring accountability and oversight on behalf of students, children, consumers and those who are too often denied a voice.
“Since Day One, Congresswoman Jackie Speier has been a force in the fight to combat sexual assault and harassment in all places, from our Armed Forces to college campuses to the Congress. Her legislative success – including to bring the Me Too movement to Congress and pass the CAA Reform Act and to take the ERA to the cusp of being enshrined into the Constitution – has helped defend the dignity and rights of so many.
“Her colleagues in the Congress look forward to continuing to benefit from her leadership for the remainder of her term, and from her legacy for years to come. It has been my personal honor to share representation of San Francisco with her and work with her to save the San Francisco Bay. On behalf of Congresswoman Speier’s many friends in Congress, I thank her husband Barry and her children Jackson and Stephanie for sharing Jackie with the Congress and the Country, and we all wish them the best in all their future endeavors.”
