Pelosi Statement on Retirement Announcement of Chairwoman Eddie Bernice Johnson
San Francisco – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement after Science, Space, and Technology Committee Chairwoman Eddie Bernice Johnson announced her retirement at the end of her term:
“Chairwoman Eddie Bernice Johnson has been a dedicated and highly effective leader on behalf of Dallas area families and the entire nation for her thirty years in the Congress and nearly 50 years in public service. She has used her gavel as the powerful Chair of the Science, Space, and Technology Committee to advance great progress for America, and her leadership and friendship will be missed by many in the Congress.
“Chairwoman Johnson has made history — from being the first Black woman elected to state public office from Dallas, to being the first African American and first woman Chair of the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology — whose leadership has made a difference in our nation. Chairwoman Johnson has made progress, as a lawmaker with a track record of success for America’s children and future, including to promote STEM education, ensure diversity and inclusion in science and combat the climate crisis with a firm focus on innovation.
“As a senior member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, she was vital to the passage of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill, now signed into law by President Biden.
“Chairwoman Johnson is a beloved daughter of Texas, whose leadership has strengthened the health, financial security and well-being of families across Texas’s 30th District. On behalf of her many friends in Congress, we thank the Chairwoman for her leadership for the people of Texas and all Americans, and wish her and her family, including her beloved son Kirk and grandchildren Kirk Jr, David and James, the best in their next steps.”
