Press Release

Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement on the passing of former Congressman Dennis Moore of Kansas:

“Today, the people of Kansas and the country have sadly lost a leader who exemplified civility, conscience and collegiality: Congressman Dennis Moore.  Congressman Moore was a patriot who served America at every step of his life – as a Captain in the United States Intelligence Corps and in the United States Army Reserve, as Assistant Kansas Attorney General and Johnson County District Attorney and then as a Member of Congress.  He continued his selfless service until his final days, courageously advocating for the six million Americans suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and their families, as he battled the disease himself.

“In his six terms in the House, Congressman Moore was a force for fairness and justice.  On the Financial Services Committee, including as Chair of the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, he strengthened oversight of taxpayer assistance to the financial system during the Great Recession and was a leader on key provisions of the historic Dodd-Frank Wall Street reform bill.  On the Small Business Committee, he worked tirelessly and on a bipartisan basis to create jobs, opportunity and hope for all Americans, and on the Budget Committee and as a Policy Co-Chair of the Blue Dogs, was a strong voice for fiscal discipline and responsible use of taxpayer dollars.

“Dennis was a beloved figure in his community, who took great pride in his district and in his Kansas heritage.  May it be a comfort to his wife Stephene and the entire Moore family that Dennis’s life and leadership lifted up so many in his state and across the nation.  And may it be a comfort that so many mourn their loss and pray for them at this sad time.”
