Pelosi Statement on President Trump’s Address to Farmers

January 14, 2019
Press Release
Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement after President Trump addressed the 100th American Farm Bureau Federation Annual Convention in New Orleans:

“Instead of wasting farmers’ time with empty words, the President should restore certainty to their lives by signing the bipartisan legislation that House Democrats just passed to re-open the Department of Agriculture.

“From Day One, the Trump Administration has left America’s farm country behind.  The 16 million men and women of agriculture are not doing better than ever – despite the President’s claim.  They are struggling because of plummeting prices, a tough farm economy and the damage of the Administration’s trade brinkmanship, but President Trump refuses to re-open the Department of Agriculture.  The President continues to hold farmers’ and producers’ financial security and well-being hostage to an ineffective, wasteful border wall, as he perpetuates the longest shutdown in American history.

“Democrats are proud to fight for America’s family farmers and producers, building on the progress of the overwhelmingly bipartisan Farm Bill we passed last month that strengthens the farmer safety net and food economy, while making bold investments in rural communities.  We will continue to fight to end the Trump Shutdown, and restore certainty to hard-working Americans’ lives.”
