Pelosi Statement on Ten Years Since Citizens United

Press Release

Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement marking ten years since the Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United v. FEC:

“Ten years ago, the Supreme Court’s devastating Citizens United decision opened the floodgates to big, dark special interest money in our politics, undermining a fundamental American value: that we are a government of the many, not of the money.

“For the last decade, House Democrats have been working tirelessly to overturn Citizens United and break the grip of the special interests.  That is why our new Majority has fought to advance progress For The People by passing H.R. 1, the For The People Act to end the dominance of big dark special interest money in politics and empowering small donors.  Yet, for more than 300 days, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has refused to hold a vote on this vital bill.

“The American people have made their voices clear, demanding a government that works for the public interest, not the special interests.  As we mark this anniversary, House Democrats will continue to stand with patriotic Americans across the country to turn up the heat on Leader McConnell until he is forced to take a vote on H.R. 1.  We will never rest in our mission to bring transparency and accountability to our government and safeguard our democracy For The People.”
