Pelosi, Bipartisan Delegation Conclude Second Day Commemorating 75th Anniversary of Battle of the Bulge
Bastogne, Belgium – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement at the conclusion of the second day of the bipartisan Congressional Delegation marking the 75th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge.
“The Congressional Delegation began our second day with an informative country team briefing led by the US Ambassador to Luxembourg J. Randolph Evans and US Ambassador to Belgium Ronald Gidwitz and had an opportunity to express appreciation to our Marine Detachment in Luxembourg,” said Speaker Pelosi. “It was then my honor to meet with Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg at the Grand Ducal Palace to discuss our shared World War II history and our commitment to advancing shared values."
“Next, we were pleased to engage in a series of productive dialogues focused on security, economy and governance. It was a privilege to meet with Prime Minister Xavier Bettel, and with Speaker Fernand Etgen and other senior parliamentarians,” Speaker Pelosi continued. “We underscored the imperative of governments countering anti-Semitism throughout society as well as our focus on the security, economy and governance.”
“The main purpose of our visit was to honor our veterans,” Speaker Pelosi said. “A highlight of today was a visit to Bastogne Barracks for a briefing on the history of the Battle of the Bulge and the Siege of Bastogne. While there, we saw General McAuliffe’s underground headquarters, the planning site of the successful US counterinsurgency operation against Nazi Germany. Later, we paid our respects at the memorials of nurses Renee Lamaire and Augusta Chiwy, two heroines of the War who cared for our soldiers on the battlefield."
“We also had the privilege of standing shoulder to shoulder with current 101st Airborne Division soldiers at the foxholes of Bois Jacques for a solemn ceremony in recognition of the 101st Airborne veterans,” Speaker Pelosi concluded. “As we remember this significant time in European and American history, we reaffirm our commitment to our transatlantic partnership and friendship. We ended the day as we had begun the visit with a community celebration of appreciation for US veterans of the Battle of the Bulge.”
