Pelosi Remarks at Press Event on Introduction of H.R. 1, For The People Act
|Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi delivered remarks at a press conference with House Democrats to introduce H.R. 1, For The People Act, a historic reform package to restore the promise of our nation’s democracy, end the culture of corruption in Washington, and reduce the role of money in politics to return the power back to the American people. Below are the Speaker’s remarks:
Speaker Pelosi. With the Majority comes more Members and more press. Good morning everyone. Thank you all for being here. I am honored to be here with some of the Members of the House Democratic Caucus and some of the leadership of committees of jurisdiction to deal with this very important issue of integrity in government.
I especially want to acknowledge the work and leadership of Congressman John Sarbanes over the years.
He gathered an initiative that gathered steam across the country. A hundred candidates across the country signed a letter saying they wanted H.R. 1 to be one of the first orders of business in this Congress. Thank you John Sarbanes.
We are joined by Jerry Nadler, the Chairman of the Judiciary Committee will be hearing from. Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren, Chair of the House Administration Committee. Congressman Elijah Cummings from Oversight and Reform. John Sarbanes, I acknowledged, the Chair of the Democracy Task Force. Congressman John Lewis, our hero on all subjects, and Congressman David Price who has been a champion on this for decades. And Congresswoman Veronica Escobar, a member of the freshman class, who will represent the views of that very transformative, diverse, energetic, beautiful freshman class that is energizing the Congress.
Yesterday, we made history, again, swearing in this transformative freshman class. When they took the oath, they made a difference. Today, guided by our new Members and the American people they represent – that we all represent – we are introducing H.R. 1: legislation to clean up elections and restore integrity to government.
We put power back into the hands of the people. What’s really important about this is – in our For The People agenda, we talked about lowering health care costs by lowering prescription drug prices and protecting people with pre-existing conditions. We talked about lowering – increasing – lowering – lowering health care costs, increasing paychecks by building the green infrastructure of America from sea to shining sea.
And we gave people confidence that this could happen because it was in the peoples’ interests not the special interests because of H.R. 1. It’s important for what it does, it’s important for the confidence it gives people that their voices and their concerns are heard. So, restoring the peoples’ faith in government is really our agenda.
I am thrilled that so many champions of democracy are here in this room representing organizations that fought this fight for such a long time and, again, the bill – we will hear more about it – it has many features and we will hear more about it. One of them is setting us up for the Voting Rights Act which will not be a part of the first, as we go forward, because we have to build a constitutional record to do that. But we will do that in short order and then we will have the full H.R. 1 passed the House of Representatives with the knowledge, the transparency that the American people will know that this is an option that the House has given the Senate of the United States and the President of the United States to take action in support of the American people. For The People.
With that, I am pleased to yield to the Chair of our Task Force, our champion for integrity in government, Congressman John Sarbanes.
