Pelosi Statement on Black History Month
Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today in recognition of Black History Month:
“The month of February marks Black History Month, when our country celebrates the generations of Black Americans whose courage, advocacy and patriotism have enriched our communities and strengthened our democracy. In honoring Black trailblazers and change-makers of the past, we also gain inspiration for the work that still remains to fulfill our sacred responsibility to form a more perfect union.
“Sadly, Black History Month comes as the scourges of systemic racism, injustice and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which has inflicted a devastating, disproportionate toll on the health and economic stability of communities of color, continue to undermine Americans’ rights and our most fundamental values. In the face of these grave challenges, countless young Black leaders, activists and dedicated citizens have marched, mobilized and are making a difference to advance justice and build a brighter future for all.
“In this vital mission, we are blessed by the leadership and vision of a record number of Black Members of Congress as well as the historic inauguration of Vice President Kamala Harris, the first Black woman vice president in American history. Guided by these champions for justice and opportunity, the House is working to build on the progress we made in passing H.R. 4, the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act, to end Republicans’ outrageous voter suppression campaign as well as the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, to save lives and bring accountability to our police departments. And, every day, we are continuing to fight For The People: to secure quality, affordable health care, create good-paying jobs and pursue justice for all.
“This Black History Month, House Democrats join all Americans to lift up the innumerable contributions, beautiful legacy and bright future of the Black community. Together with the new Biden-Harris Administration and Senate Democratic Majority, we will renew our nation’s bedrock promise of justice, equality and opportunity as we continue to insist on the truth that Black Lives Matter.”
