Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement in recognition of Women’s History Month:

“Women’s History Month is an opportunity for all Americans to celebrate the extraordinary achievements and contributions that women have made and continue to make to our nation.  Since our nation’s Founding, our progress has been inextricably linked to the courage and commitment of millions of women from every background and corner of the country who have worked to build a brighter future for themselves, their daughters and all Americans.

“This month, and every month, we honor the fundamental truth: that when women succeed, America succeeds.  That is why, last Congress, guided by the leadership of an historic number of women Members, House Democrats worked to empower all women by passing the Paycheck Fairness Act to reaffirm that equal work deserves equal pay, the Raise the Wage Act to give nearly 20 million working women a raise, and the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act to protect women from workplace discrimination.  This Congress, we are committed to seeing these and other vital bills become law to ensure that every woman is a full and equal participant in our economy, our society and our democracy.

“Tragically, the coronavirus pandemic and economic crisis continue to exact a devastating, disproportionate toll on America’s women, particularly mothers and women of color, with 2.3 million women pushed out of the workforce, including nearly one million mothers.  These twin crises have laid bare decades of systemic injustice and failed policies that have left women struggling to advance their health, financial security and well-being, and that of their families.  Last week, House Democrats passed President Biden’s American Rescue Plan, which takes a monumental step forward to defeat the pandemic and economic crisis for women and for all who are struggling.

“Our House Majority is committed to working with the Biden-Harris Administration and the new Democratic Senate to build on the progress made by generations of trailblazing women.  In honor of the pioneering women upon whose shoulders we stand, and the brave young women are standing up and speaking out to advance progress nationwide, we will never stop fighting until justice, equal rights and greater opportunity are a reality for every woman and every American.”
