Dear Colleague on Preparation for Next Coronavirus Response Bill
Dear Democratic Colleague,
As always, I am grateful to our House Democrats for the feedback that you are sending from your districts and for your participation in our valuable, in-depth conference calls.
In just a few days, we have received hundreds of suggestions from House Members, governors, state legislators, mayors and community organizations in preparation for the next bill. From governors across America, the three major concerns expressed are Unemployment Insurance, increased Medicaid funding and further assistance to small businesses.
As we proceed with further legislation, we all see this tragic pandemic as a challenge for us to shape an economy that puts Families First. In our conversations with industries affected, we have made clear that any support begins with helping workers. We are grateful to our friends in the labor movement for their ongoing advocacy and proposals, all of which put Families First. We are also advantaged by the leadership of our Committee Chairs, all of whom are advancing progressive proposals which are visionary and fast-acting.
There are ongoing discussions in our Caucus on how to put money quickly in the hands of Americans. Our Chairs are suggesting ways which are structural. For example, solutions include expanding eligibility for Unemployment Insurance which will expedite financial relief for more people. In terms of helping small businesses, solutions include funds to ensure that workers continue to be paid. Refundable tax credits including the EITC and the child tax credit continue to be priorities as Members discuss other cash payments in the days ahead.
The coronavirus pandemic has brought great pain to our country, but we must be hopeful that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Science has given us reason to be hopeful, and the best minds in America are working all hands on deck. Take pride in your support for our first bill which allocated billions of dollars for research for treatments and a vaccine and in our second bill putting Families First, focusing on testing, testing, testing.
Thank you again for all of the views that have been presented. I am looking forward to our conference call tomorrow. I send gratitude and,
