Pelosi Statement on 9th Anniversary of the Affordable Care Act
March 23, 2019
|San Francisco — Speaker Nancy Pelosi released this statement marking the 9th anniversary of President Obama signing the Affordable Care Act into law on March 23, 2010:
“Nine years ago, the signing of the Affordable Care Act established a pillar of health security and economic security that stands alongside Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. This transformational law has expanded coverage, lowered costs, and secured life-saving protections for every American, no matter where they get health coverage.
“Under the GOP Congress, the affordable health care that seniors and families rely upon was under constant threat. Even now, the Trump Administration seeks to destroy protections for people with pre-existing conditions in the Texas v. U.S. lawsuit and continues the health care sabotage that has senselessly driven up premiums and left more people uninsured. But with our House Majority, Democrats are fighting relentlessly to protect Americans’ health care and to lower health costs and prescription drug prices for the American people.
“On day one of the 116th Congress, the House took immediate action to protect people with pre-existing conditions and the health care of all Americans by voting to intervene against Republicans’ monstrous Texas lawsuit. This week, we will take another step forward to strengthen protections for pre-existing conditions, reverse the GOP’s health care sabotage, and lower Americans’ health costs. And we will continue to fight for bold action to lower prescription drug prices.
“As we mark the 9th anniversary of the Affordable Care Act, we reaffirm our commitment to this fundamental truth: that health care must be a right, not a privilege, for all Americans.”
