Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today marking the 73rd anniversary of Israel’s Independence Day, Yom Ha’atzmaut:

“Today, we celebrate the birth of the Jewish state, forged into being through extraordinary courage and faith to become one of the greatest political achievements of the 20th century.  With a vibrant culture and innovative economy, Israel has flourished in the face of enormous challenges and existential threats as an anchor of democracy in the seven decades since its founding.  Every day, Israel defies the long odds to realize its founding promise: to serve as a homeland for the Jewish people in the land of their ancestors.

“Seventy-three years ago, the United States extended its hand to the newly established Israeli state merely minutes after its founding – becoming the fledgling nation’s first friend and oldest ally.  Our two nations have since built an unbreakable bond, united by our shared democratic values and an unwavering commitment to a safe, secure state for the Jewish people.  That is why, in 2019, the House passed a resolution reaffirming our support for a two-state solution so that we may ‘ensure the state of Israel’s survival as a Jewish and democratic state and fulfill the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people for a state of their own.’  House Democrats look forward to working alongside the Biden Administration to negotiate a two-state solution and pave a path to peace.

“This Israeli Independence Day, let us pray for the continued success of the democratic Jewish state.”
