Pelosi Statement on the Passing of Former Congresswoman Ellen Tauscher

April 30, 2019

Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement on the passing of former Congresswoman Ellen Tauscher:

“Today, with the passing of former Congresswoman Ellen Tauscher, the Congress and the country have lost a leader of exceptional courage, firm principles and unmatched persistence.  Her passing is a great loss to the people of California and to the nation, and is a source of heartbreak for all who were blessed to call her friend.  Personally, it was a joy to see the delight she took in being a mother to Katherine.

“Ellen was an extraordinary force for progress who made a difference.  To watch Ellen wield the gavel was to observe a masterclass in steady, steely leadership.  Her smart, strategic leadership, whether presiding over the House, chairing the Armed Services Strategic Forces Subcommittee or leading America’s arms control strategy, strengthened our democratic institutions and kept America safe.  Her relentless commitment to nuclear nonproliferation, which is a pillar of America’s national security, beautifully honored the oath we all take: to support and defend the Constitution, and protect the American people.

“Ellen was a pioneer, who made history when she became the youngest-ever, and one of the only, women members of the New York Stock Exchange.  Her powerful voice for technology, science and innovation was vital in keeping America’s leadership preeminent in the world.

“Ellen’s friendship was a gift, and her leadership will continue to inspire generations of American leaders.  She leaves behind a legacy of outstanding service, marked by deep patriotism and tireless commitment to progress.  May it be a comfort to Ellen’s beloved daughter, Katherine, and her many loved ones, that so many share their loss and pray for them at this sad time.”
