Pelosi Statement on March Jobs Report
Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement after the Department of Labor released its March jobs report:
“The March jobs report comes as our nation faces the unprecedented health and economic crisis posed by the coronavirus pandemic. This deadly virus has already had a deep impact on every aspect of American life, putting millions of Americans out of work and inflicting stress and uncertainty on countless workers and families.
“Congress has taken important steps in meeting the needs of the American people during this crisis by passing three bills with over $2 trillion dollars in emergency relief. This historic action puts American workers and families first and provides critical support needed to weather this crisis, including improved unemployment benefits with an additional $600 per week for the next four months, despite Republicans’ objections.
“The devastating news in the March jobs report demands our next step be to go bigger and further assisting small business, to go longer in unemployment benefits and to provide additional direct payments. We must also provide the desperately needed resources for our hospitals, health systems, health workers and state and local governments on the frontlines of this crisis.
“The coronavirus is moving swiftly, and our communities cannot afford for us to wait. House Democrats will continue to work relentlessly and in a bipartisan way to lift up American families and workers to protect their health, economic security and well-being today and throughout this crisis.”
