Pelosi Statement on Jewish American Heritage Month
San Francisco – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement in recognition of Jewish American Heritage Month:
“Jewish American Heritage Month is an opportunity to celebrate our vibrant and cherished Jewish American community. Generations of Jewish Americans have made immeasurable contributions to our nation that have shaped the American story, and the community’s strength and success today serve as a powerful testament to the American Dream.
“Jewish immigrants fleeing violence, oppression and persecution all over the world have long sought safe haven on our shores, finding in America a bastion of hope, liberty and justice. For centuries, Jewish Americans have embraced these bedrock ideals and helped bring our democracy closer to a more perfect union. Tragically, they have too often encountered shadows of the same dark forces of hatred and bigotry here in America as well – in the streets of Charlottesville, in sacred houses of worship and even inside our temple of democracy, the United States Capitol, on January 6. These hateful displays of bigotry challenge our collective conscience, reminding us of our moral responsibility to always condemn antisemitism whenever we see it.
“May this Jewish American Heritage Month afford us a chance to renew our commitment to defending our Founders’ promise of religious liberty for all, so that every family may always be free to proudly practice their faith. As we confront the challenges that lie ahead, from ending the pandemic to solving the climate crisis to building a fairer economy, let us draw inspiration from the Jewish spirit of tikkun olam, which calls on us to repair the world, pursue justice and advance the common good.”
