Pelosi Statement on President Trump’s Proposed Actions Against Beijing Related to Hong Kong
San Francisco – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement after the President announced potential economic, trade and visa restrictions against Beijing:
“The vague measures suggested by President Trump are nothing new and do not articulate a real or serious strategy to confront China’s actions. For three years, President Trump has dangerously emboldened Chinese President Xi to accelerate his human rights crackdown including against the people of Hong Kong.
“Congress, on a bipartisan basis, has for decades proudly stood with the people of Hong Kong and all those facing abuse and oppression from Beijing. Last fall, the House passed and the President signed the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act to reaffirm the United States’ commitment to human rights and the rule of law in Hong Kong. This winter we passed the Tibetan Policy and Support Act and last week we again passed the Uyghur Human Rights Policy Act to promote human rights in China.
“If the President is serious about confronting China’s human rights abuses, he must work with Congress to craft an effective, robust strategy. As the world sadly marks 31 years since the Tiananmen Square Massacre, it is more important than ever that America speak out against Beijing’s accelerating oppression.
“If America does not speak out for human rights in China because of commercial interests, we lose all moral authority to speak out elsewhere."
