Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement in honor of Cinco de Mayo:

“On Cinco de Mayo, we remember the extraordinary courage of a poorly-armed Mexican militia who overcame impossible odds to achieve victory against the Imperial French Army at the Battle of Puebla.  This day of celebration is a source of immense pride for the people of Mexico and serves as an opportunity for all Americans to honor the innumerable contributions and rich heritage of Mexican Americans and the entire Latino community.

“Today, we recognize the diverse and vibrant Latino community whose stories and history are woven into the fabric of our nation.  Whether as recent immigrants or families who have been proud Americans for generations, Latino men, women and children have been the constant reinvigoration of America, harnessing their creativity, ingenuity and passion in pursuit of the American Dream.  Their hard-work, dedicated service and entrepreneurial spirit have strengthened our culture, our economy and our communities and, in the process, made America more American.

“This Cinco de Mayo, as our nation and the world face a staggering health and economic crisis, we must stay vigilant against continued injustices against immigrant communities, and ensure that every family, regardless of status or national origin receives the care and relief that they deserve.  House Democrats are committed to opposing racism, xenophobia and all forms of hatred that weaken our communities and undermine our response to this deadly pandemic.  On this special day, let us draw inspiration from our Mexican neighbors’ hard-won victory at the Battle of Puebla in our tireless fight against the coronavirus, and let us continue our work to overcome this unprecedented threat and build a healthier, safer and more prosperous future for all.”
