Pelosi Statement on Trump’s Family Detention Plan

Press Release
Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued this statement after President Trump signed an order to replace family separation with family detention:

“The President’s Executive Order seeks to replace one form of child abuse with another.  Instead of protecting traumatized children, the President has directed his Attorney General to pave the way for the long-term incarceration of families in prison-like conditions.

“It is particularly galling that President Trump seeks to continue violating children’s human rights to justify and gin up support for the anti-family language included in Speaker Ryan’s anti-immigrant bill.  According to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, the Ryan bill ‘fails to adequately address the current situation of family separation at the border and instead seeks to expand child detention.' Further, both pieces of Republican anti-immigrant legislation ‘perpetuate child detention and undermine existing protections relating to such detention.’

“Using terrified small children as leverage to push the President’s anti-immigrant agenda represents an unspeakably appalling moral low-point for our nation.  Yet, House Republicans continue their complicity in the President’s atrocities and cravenly cheerlead the President’s policy.

“Every child is entitled to basic human rights.  How dare the President and House Republicans assert otherwise.”
