Pelosi Statement on World Refugee Day
June 20, 2019
Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement in recognition of United Nations’ World Refugee Day:
“On World Refugee Day, people across the globe pause to reflect on the struggles of millions of men, women and children who have been forced to flee their homes, their families and their countries to escape unimaginable violence, persecution and natural disasters. As more than 68 million refugees and displaced persons around the world fight to secure the blessings of life and liberty, we must reaffirm our unwavering commitment to support and defend these courageous individuals.
“America has long stood as a beacon of hope and opportunity for refugees from around the world who are ‘yearning to breathe free.’ Yet, from family separation, to child incarceration, to gutting asylum protections, the Trump Administration’s cruel anti-immigrant, anti-refugee agenda has dishonored our heritage and threatened the lives and well-being of countless men, women and children looking to pursue the American Dream. The Administration’s latest threat of a mass deportation dragnet is a stunning act of cruelty, designed solely to inject fear and uncertainty in our communities.
“As we mark World Refugee Day, we must stand firm against these discriminatory policies and callous attacks on our proud immigrant and refugee communities. This month, House Democrats took bold action to protect our Dreamers and DED and TPS recipients and provide a pathway to citizenship by passing H.R. 6, the Dream and Promise Act. We will build on this progress by advancing smart, effective immigration reform that honors our values, protects refugees and asylum seekers and keeps families together and safe. In honor of refugees in America and around the world, we will never stop fighting to build a world of peace, prosperity and hope for all.”
