Dear Colleague to All Members on Moment of Silence & Arrangements for Congressman John Lewis
When our beloved John Lewis left us on Friday evening, he did so with the respect and gratitude of our entire country. That same day, Rev. C.T. Vivian, another giant of the Civil Rights movement, made his passage. Rev. Vivian’s services will be held on Thursday. Out of respect for Rev. Vivian, the Lewis family wants to wait until after his services to announce their plans for John’s farewell.
Today, the Georgia delegation, under the leadership of the dean of the delegation, Congressman Sanford Bishop, will honor John with a moment of silence and a bereavement resolution. This will take place between the previous question and the vote on the rule. Because of the COVID-19 limitations, we are asking Members to observe this moment of silence in place. COVID will also affect plans for John’s arrangements, which are pending.
We are all deeply saddened by the loss of our colleague. All of us who served with John know that he always worked on the side of the angels. Now he is with them. May he rest in peace.
