McCarthy’s GOP: Leaving No White Nationalist/Extremist Behind
From Speaker Pelosi’s Press Office
In Kevin McCarthy’s House Republican Conference, defending the truth is the worst crime a Member can commit. McCarthy looks the other way and welcomes Members who spread dangerous conspiracy theories and consort with insurrections, far right extremists and white supremacists, but he punishes and threatens those in his Conference who dare to stand up for our democracy.
Several months have passed since McCarthy threw truth to the wind by ousting his third-in-command from leadership for telling the truth about the 2020 election. In the last few weeks, he’s double downed. Here’s a small taste of the kind of behavior McCarthy has led or allowed to go unchecked in just the last few weeks:
“House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy on Wednesday issued a blanket threat during a meeting with freshmen members of his caucus that he would strip any Republican member of their committee assignments if they accept an offer from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to serve on the select committee to investigate the January 6 insurrection, according to two GOP sources with knowledge of the matter.”
“Two GOP sources told CNN McCarthy's threat speaks to one thing – that the GOP leader is threatened by the select committee and once again is doing everything he can to try to kill it.”
“A conservative YouTuber [Anthony Aguero] who participated in the January 6 riot accompanied Republican members of Congress on a trip to the border Tuesday night, serving as a translator at times.”
“After chanting ‘heave-ho’ as rioters attempted to break in, [Aguero] entered the Capitol Rotunda and later chanted ‘our house’ on the Capitol steps. In a livestream one day after the Capitol riot, he attacked those who condemned the ransacking of the Capitol.”
“The trip to the border in La Joya, Texas, was organized by the Republican Study Committee, a caucus of conservative members of the House of Representatives, and covered by reporters from CNN, Politico, The Hill, and members of conservative media.”
“In an unsubtle rebuke to his many critics, Rep. Paul Gosar is planning a fundraising event with a white nationalist who has been banned from YouTube for repeatedly violating rules against hate speech.”
“A post on the conservative social media platform Telegram may have teased a fundraiser with Gosar, R-Ariz., and Nick Fuentes, who attended the deadly 2017 Charlottesville rally. The post came from an account said to have ties to Fuentes.”
“Gosar's presence at AFPAC was the first by a sitting member of Congress. It put him alongside other far-right provocateurs, such as former Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, whose political career ended after Republicans stripped him of committee duties after he questioned why "white supremacist" was considered an offensive term.”
“The Daily Beast has quoted Fuentes as saying: ‘White people are done being bullied’ and praised the deadly Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol as ‘awesome.’”
“Mr. Gosar’s ties to racists like Mr. Fuentes and America First, as well as similar far-right fringe organizations and activists, have been less scrutinized. A review of public comments and social media posts suggests that in Mr. Gosar, they have found an ally and advocate in Congress.”
“His unapologetic association with them is perhaps the most vivid example of the Republican Party’s growing acceptance of extremism, which has become apparent as more lawmakers espouse and amplify conspiracy theories and far-right ideologies that figure prominently in the belief systems of fringe groups.”
This Fourth of July recess, Kevin McCarthy has made it clear once again what kind of leader he is. Not only will he kowtow to the radical elements of his conference and look the other way when they hold fundraisers with white supremacists or invite insurrectionists to events, but he will also actively silence and threaten anyone who stands up for the truth and our democracy.
