Dear Colleague on Discussions with Trump Administration over Urgently Needed Coronavirus Relief Bill
Dear Democratic Colleague,
Earlier today, Leader Schumer and I met again with Secretary Mnuchin and Chief of Staff Meadows to continue our discussions over the urgently needed coronavirus relief bill.
This is a very different kind of negotiation, because of what is at stake. Millions of children are food insecure, millions of families are at risk of eviction, and for the nineteenth straight week, over 1 million Americans applied for unemployment insurance. Our nation's GDP also saw the biggest quarterly drop on record.
Central to solving this health and economic crisis is a scientific approach to end the virus, to open our economy and safely send our children to school.
As you know, eleven weeks ago, the House passed The Heroes Act: a vital, comprehensive plan to support our heroes in state & local government, to crush the virus with testing, tracing and treatment and to put money in the pockets of the American people. For months, Republicans insisted on a ‘pause’ and now critical lifelines that families depend on are expiring, our economy is in crisis and the virus is moving like a runaway freight train.
Today's meeting was more productive than our previous discussions, but no agreement can be reached yet. Work will continue on a staff level tomorrow. Leader Schumer and I will meet again with Secretary Mnuchin and Chief of Staff Meadows on Monday.
All parties must understand the gravity of the situation in order to reach an agreement that protects Americans' lives, livelihoods and the life of our democracy.
Thank you for your leadership.
