Pelosi Statement on Women’s Equality Day
San Francisco – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement marking Women’s Equality Day, commemorating the 99th anniversary of the adoption of the 19th Amendment:
"Today, on Women’s Equality Day, we celebrate 99 years since American women took a momentous step forward in the fight for equal rights by securing their right to suffrage. Women did not wait for this change, they worked for change, fighting over generations for their voices to be heard as full and equal citizens in our democracy.
"Nearly 100 years later, standing on the shoulders of trailblazing suffragists, including countless unsung women of color, American women continue to fight to bring our nation closer to fulfilling our most sacred ideals – liberty, equality and justice for all. A new generation of women leaders is working to defend and strengthen the progress our nation has made to advance the health and economic security of women and families, understanding that when women succeed, America succeeds.
"Together, we must carry on the suffragists’ fight for access to the ballot box, and combat the ongoing voter suppression efforts that undermine our democracy and disproportionally disenfranchise communities of color. As we celebrate the 99th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, we once again call on Senator McConnell to end his obstruction and finally take up our legislation to protect the vote, including H.R. 1, the For The People Act. Democrats are committed to harnessing the pioneering spirit of America’s suffragists as we rededicate ourselves to the important work left to be done to ensure all Americans can enjoy the blessings of liberty."
