Press Release

Washington, D.C. — Speaker Nancy Pelosi will travel to the United Kingdom this week to participate in the G7 Heads of Parliament Conference, which begins Friday, September 17 in Chorley, England.  The theme of this year’s G7 Speakers’ Meeting is “Open vs. Secure Parliaments.”  In addition to formal sessions and bilateral meetings, Speaker Pelosi will present a U.S. flag at St. Laurence’s Church in Chorley, to replace a flag given by American Servicemembers stationed in the area during World War II.

Prior to G7 meetings, the Speaker will participate in a moderated conversation at the Cambridge Union Society at Cambridge University, where she will accept an honorary membership.  The Speaker has also been invited to participate in a conversation at Chatham House in London, a premier independent policy institute and trusted forum for debate and dialogue.  At both presentations, the Speaker’s emphasis will be on how we can work together to address the climate crisis leading up to the United Nations Climate Conference (COP-26) in November in Glasgow.  The Speaker’s first meeting will be to thank the Marine detachment at the U.S. Embassy London to thank them for their courageous leadership.  The Speaker will also be briefed by U.S. diplomatic officials at the American embassy and participate in meetings with senior UK government officials.

“It is a privilege to join my G7 colleagues in the United Kingdom to discuss a top priority for legislatures and governments across the world: how to balance security and openness, particularly in light of challenges from the coronavirus pandemic, cyberthreats and terrorism,” said Speaker Nancy Pelosi.  “Public access to the workings of government is a cornerstone of democracy, and it is therefore imperative that parliaments and legislatures remain as open and transparent to the public as possible.  We need to hear from – and be accountable to – those we are privileged to represent, as we work to deliver results in their lives.”

“On behalf of the United States Congress, I extend my gratitude to the Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, for hosting this important meeting and for his recognition of the urgency and gravity of the challenges we face,” continued Speaker Pelosi.  “As representatives of the G7 nations, we all have a responsibility to work together to strengthen our democracies and advance the democratic values of accountability, openness and public engagement.”
