Pelosi Statement on Trump Administration Decision to Revoke California’s Authority to Set Auto Pollution Standards
Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement following the announcement that President Trump’s Environmental Protection Agency will revoke California’s legal authority to set auto pollution standards, as guaranteed under the Clean Air Act:
“President Trump and the EPA have no authority to revoke California’s right to enact strong, effective auto pollution standards designed to protect the health of our communities and save hard-working families money. This outrageous, partisan assault is the latest example of the Trump Administration’s toxic special interest agenda, which is destroying critical, lifesaving environmental protections across the country and putting billions of dollars into the pockets of big donors and dirty energy polluters.
“California is leading our nation with bold, forward-looking solutions to curb the spread of deadly pollutants that jeopardize our children’s future. All automakers should join California and its state partners in our shared mission to strengthen our economy and safeguard our environment. Californians will relentlessly defend our state’s right to protect the clean air our families rely on – even when the federal government refuses to do so.
“House Democrats will continue to work closely with the State of California and its partners across the country to secure a sustainable, clean energy future for our children and grandchildren that creates jobs and takes decisive action against the climate crisis. While the Trump Administration doubles down on its monstrous agenda, we will never stop fighting to protect the people and places we love.”
